Lynn Anderson was born on 26th September 1947 in Grand Forks North Dakota but raised in California and is responsible for one of the best-known Country songs of all time. The international hit, ""Rose Garden"" written by Joe South, was No 1 on the country charts in 1970 for 5 weeks and peaked at No 3 on the pop chart as well as achieving top ten status in most countries of the world. Lynn was named female vocalist of the year at the 1971 CMA awards and won a Grammy. The recordings on this collection were made in the early Nineties and show her unique vocal powers undiminished. While the title of this recording plays on the then-popular idea of background and mood music, there's still plenty of jazz interest generated by Oklahoma-born guitarist Barney Kessel, one of the true heirs of Charlie Christian. The 1956 session matches Kessel with five reeds (including oboe, flute, and clarinets) and a fine rhythm section made up of other West Coast stalwarts: bassist Red Mitchell and drummer Shelly Manne. The arrangements range from the chamber music texture of "My Reverie" to the briskly swinging renditions of "Mountain Greenery" and "Fascinatin' Rhythm." Kessel plays wonderfully throughout, whether rendering rapid single-note lines or constructing the beautifully chorded introduction to the ballad "Laura." There are also fine solo contributions by Buddy Collette on flute and the superb pianist Jimmy Rowles. --Stuart Broomer

Maroon 5 aren't the first band to fuse R&B and rock, but they certainly are one of the most convincing. One can almost hear Stevie Wonder's beaded braids clattering in time to their deep, funky grooves. At best, the band conjures up latter-day Motown, complete with a shuddering organ and hyperbolic vocals; at worst, they sound like a stylized boy band, with all the attendant close harmonies and dramatic pauses. To Live & Die In L.A.: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack Specifications
Director William Friedkin knows a thing or two about innovative, genre-bending film scores. He commissioned edgy modern-jazz player Don Ellis for his classic The French Connection and reworked Mike Oldfield's "Tubular Bells" into the haunting soundtrack for the blockbuster The Exorcist. But even veteran film buffs were surprised when Friedkin turned the scoring chores for his taut 1985 forgery-ring thriller To Live and Die in LA over to British pop stars Wang Chung. Though they're still best known for their perennial rock-of-the-'80s hits "Dancehall Days," "Everybody Have Fun Tonight," and "Let's Go," Friedkin's early admiration for the band's often underrated musicality paid off with a tense, rhythmic soundscape that crystallized the era and locale of the film. And, though synth-pop has gained ill repute as a cheesy 1980s cliché, this album ably proves that it could rise above its stereotype in dramatic fashion. While many soundtracks include music "inspired by" a given property, Music to Duel By is intended to inspire. The songs on this companion to the Yu-Gi-Oh global phenomenon (toys, cartoons, software) is supposed to provide background music for the tension-packed card games played by Yu-Gi-Oh enthusiasts. The album opens with the TV show's theme, a hyperkinetic mix of symphonic sounds and industrial metal, and contains a few other songs heard on the series, but most of the music appears here for the first time. Three of the entries are singled out as "special battle tracks," and they sound very much like high-end video game scores: the of-the-moment drum & bass percussion, the campily canned violins, the grab-bag source material. Those cuts are admirable for their short-attention-span theatricality, the way the various distinct musical segments edge the tension up a notch at a time, allowing for an occasional balladic moment of repose. Some of the vocal tracks evidence that peculiar Japanese fascination with overproduced '80s American pop, and will likely send kids running to their Linkin Park and Mudvayne CDs, but it's hard to argue with an album that includes a limited-edition set of stickers. --Marc Weidenbaum Read more...

The highly anticipated album features stars Katharine McPhee (Karen), Megan Hilty (Ivy Lynn) and other cast members performing the original music created for the show s narrative and for the musical-within-a-musical. Highlighted on the album are the Broadway-caliber songs written for the series by Tony and Grammy winners Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman. The "Smash" also includes some of the pop tunes that have been adapted for the show, such as Christina Aguilera's "Beautiful", the show-stopping song that Karen sings so effectively for her audition that she is plucked, literally, from obscurity to audition for the musical s starring role. Among the songs included on the soundtrack are the charming "Mr. and Mrs. Smith", sung by Hilty as the character of Marilyn and Will Chase performs as the actor playing her new husband, Joe DiMaggio.
